Let's see if we can help you out either way-

Your garage door is more than an entry.

When working properly, it is a vital part of your home security. It provides peace of mind, convenience, freedom, and needs to be counted on when you or anyone in your family enters or leaves your house. Besides increasing the curb appeal and value of your home, it's also one of those things that is easy to take for granted until there's a problem.

Knowing just a few things first can get that problem fixed in the best way with the least amount of hassle.

First- get good advice from someone who knows overhead doors inside and out.

If you're not sure what the problem is, there are installers that are service-minded enough to help you at no cost on the phone with a few simple questions. (If you live in the St. Louis area, one is listed below these tips). Sometimes with the right information, you can take care of things without the need for a service trip or installation. Also, you might want to know how to tell if it's more likely your door or the opener that's the source of the problem.

6 Quick and Useful Tips . . .

1- You may want to disengage the door from the opener. (In most cases this is best checked when the door is down, and usually by pulling the overhead handle). Then lift the door manually upwards in a slow manner. If it doesn't lift, it's likely the door has a broken spring or a roller problem.

2- When you can't get the door to close except only by holding the button on the wall, there's a good chance it's a safety sensor problem. Something is probably obstructing the sensors, or they are not aligned properly, or need replacement.  If it's an obstruction, it's often something you can take care of yourself by removing what's in the way.

3- If you have a 2 car garage, look above the center of the problem door for a big coil spring. If there is roughly a 2 inch gap in the middle of that, it's generally a sign that it's broken.

4- With a 1 car garage, check the springs at the door sides. They should both look identical. If the door works fine manually, the problem you have is more than likely with the garage door opener motor. If it is the motor, you're probably best off calling a service technician experienced in the work of overhead doors.

5- See if it opens with or without the garage door remote, and check the battery on the remote unit. If this device is broken, some can be purchased at large home centers. The problem comes when these universal openers are often not suited to your particular unit. You could save some time and headache by consulting first with a service technician on this one.

6- Lastly, in the event of ice or snow, either one can keep an otherwise working door from opening. This is something you may be able to fix. See if you can free the door from frozen matter before making another attempt. If that's all it is, your door may work fine once unstuck. (While some have poured a little anti-freeze by the bottom of the door for this, be aware that this is quite poisonous to any animals or pets that sometimes drink the substance).
